Every file is mostly your data, wrapped around a small index that tells software how to read it. Corruption usually breaks that index (marked here), not the data itself. Rebuilding the index is what repair does.

How in-browser repair works

The repair engine is the same kind of parsing-and-rebuilding code a server-side tool would run, only built to run inside your browser tab instead. When you drop a file, the browser's File API hands the engine direct access to the bytes on your disk. The engine reads the file's structure, finds the intact data, rebuilds the broken parts around it, and writes a new file into your browser's memory. The download is a memory-to-disk copy on your own machine.

An upload-based "online tool" does the same work in a different place: your file travels to their server, gets processed there, and a result travels back. That model means waiting through a multi-gigabyte upload before you learn anything, and it means your file exists on someone else's hardware. Ours never does. What this can and can't fix

Repairable: broken structure

  • Truncated files: recordings or transfers cut off mid-write
  • Missing or damaged indexes (a video's moov atom, a ZIP's central directory, a PDF's xref table)
  • Header and marker damage in photos and media files
  • Files that data-recovery software got back in a broken state

Not repairable: missing data

  • Data that was physically overwritten (no software can restore it)
  • Footage that was never written to disk (the seconds in RAM when a device died)
  • Encrypted or DRM-protected files without their keys
  • Files that read as all zeros or 0 bytes: that's a recovery problem, not a repair problem

Repair rebuilds structure around surviving data. It never invents content that isn't in the file, and if a repair fails, you don't pay.
